Smoke Detection
Monitored Smoke Detection
Key Requirements:
Interconnected Alarms: All alarms in a household must be interconnected so that the activation of one triggers all alarms.
Installation Locations: Alarms must be installed in every bedroom, living area, hallway, landing, and on each level of multi-story homes.
Alarm Types: Alarms must be photoelectric and meet standards such as BS EN 14604, AS 3786, UL 217, CAN/ULC S531, or ISO 12239.
Additional Features: Alarms must include hush and test buttons and be mounted on or near the ceiling.
Special Considerations: In kitchens or areas separated by doors, install alarms specially designed for kitchens (like heat alarms) need to be installed to prevent false alarms.
For rental properties, landlords must ensure that smoke alarms are either hard-wired or equipped with long-life batteries and meet these requirements. Tenants are responsible for replacing the batteries as needed.
