| NEW LEGISLATION CALLS FOR RECOGNISED QUALIFICATIONS |
|
The New Zealand Government have recently passed a law that will require all security guards, crowd controllers and private investigators are properly trained and qualified to NZQA standards before they can work in the industry. The new bill is to ensure all security personnel are not just licensed as in the past, but also have the skills and training to do their job well. It is the first time the Private Investigators and Security Guards Act 1974 has been updated since its introduction. Tauranga-based security company, Nutech, voluntarily adopted standards in staff training some time ago. They employed a highly qualified security trainer, Justin Thomson, which allowed Nutech to become a workplace training organisation registered with ETITO and to establish in house systems required to officially train and qualify staff to recognised NZQA Standards. “The ETITO is the Electro-technology Industry Training Organisation. Their vision is to bring appropriately skilled people to our industries”, said Mr Thomson. He has since been promoted to the position of Training and Operations Manager which means he is now able to actively monitor the performance of all operational frontline security officers as well as implement the necessary training and skills. “What this means for Nutech is that officers assigned to clients are licensed, competent and qualified”, said Keith Margan, Managing Director. The new bill is due to take effect in December 2010 in preparation for the Rugby World Cup in 2011.
